Hispanic/Non-Hispanic intermarriage

Hello,

I am an undergrad exploring data for possible research topics and I wanted to look at intermarriage between Hispanics and non-Hispanics. Can I do this using ipums-USA and the “analyze data online” tool? I am not sure how to create output that shows (for example) the number of married couples where husband = non-Hispanic white and wife = Hispanic, or husband= Hispanic and wife = Non-Hispanic white.

I have access to SAS but I don’t understand how to set up this inquiry there either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is not easy to do using the online data analysis system, but it is simple in SAS. You want to create an extract with RACE and HISPAN. Then, when you create your extract, use the “attach characteristics” feature to attach the race and ethnicity of each person’s spouse. Then you can choose either men or women and look at combinations of RACE, RACE_SP, HISPAN, HISPAN_SP. This short video shows you exactly how to do this.
