I am teaching a Data Visualization class and I’d like to give the students some of this data for their projects.
Since this is “redistribution” I need to ask for permission.
I could just tell the students to register and download data themselves, but I thought it would be more efficient to provide them with a CSV file.
Thank you,
Mike
As long as you are disseminating for educational purposes you are allowed to proceed without requiring each of your students to apply for an IPUMS account. Although some professors do like to encourage and familiarize their students with the IPUMS data extract system by requiring them to fill out IPUMS accounts.
I’m teaching a Data Science class as well next semester and wanted to use some of the CPS data. Just wanted to confirm that because it’s for educational purposes, I can provide my students with a sample dataset, instead of having them register and download it.
The redistribution term for IPUMS CPS, which registered users agree to when creating an account, states:
You may publish a subset of the data to meet journal requirements for accessing data related to a particular publication. Contact us for permission for any other redistribution.
Please contact ipums@umn.edu directly about your redistribution request. While we typically approve these types of request, it is helpful for us to have documentation that this type of redistribution is happening, and nice to have a scope of the sample and variable coverage of the dataset you plan to share with students.
