Hi,
I’m new to using historical data from the 1940 Census. It doesn’t look like you can access the address of the household, even though if you look on Ancestry.com, you can easily get that information. Is it possible to get from the IPUMS for 1940 or earlier censuses?
Thanks.
Addresses, names, and a few other variables are only available by applying for a restricted use license. To do so, please email ipums@umn.edu with a short description of your research project, including why you require the address data.
Thanks so much. In the restricted use data, have the addresses been geocoded?
Best regards,
Samantha
Neither the public use nor the restricted use versions of the full count data have been geocoded. Although address-level locations are not available, currently there are two options for very-low-level geography for the 1940 census:
- A team at Brown has a set of Enumeration District shapefiles for a set of large cities.
- IPUMS NHGIS has shapefiles down to the Census Tract level for 1940.
