Should I take this to mean that one cannot view whether a person with foreign residence in 1973 was in Angola, Mozambique, or another foreign country?

The harmonized migration variable MIG1_7_PT and its corresponding source variable PT1981A_RESP73A report the subregion of residence in 1973. Subregions were not reported for persons who lived outside of Portugal and as a result persons who lived abroad are all assigned to this “Foreign Country” code.

However, the source variable PT1981A_RESP73B provides additional detail about the country of residence in 1973. While Angola, Mozambique, and several other countries are grouped into a single code to protect respondent privacy (see screenshot below), I hope that this additional detail is still helpful.

This source variable does not have a corresponding harmonized variable, which can make it more difficult to locate on the website. My recommendation on finding these source variables is, after selecting your samples of interest, to fill the Source Variables bubble from the variable selection page (see screenshot below). You will then be able to use the drop-down menus to navigate to groups of source variables, including PT1981A_RESP73B under the Person → Migration: Global menu, to see all source variables regardless of whether they have a corresponding harmonized variable.
