IHIS Variables for Health Insurance and Race?

#1

Hi,

Is there a IHIS variable that specifically answers whether or not someone has health insurance coverage (yes/no)?

Also, is there a specific IHIS race/ethnicity variable that includes white, black, hispanic, and other?

Thank you!

There are two IHIS variables that record whether or not someone has health insurance coverage: HINOTCOVE and HINOTCOV (excludes single-service plans). Note that these variables record whether or not someone was without health insurance. In other words, a “No” response means the respondent did have health insurance and a “Yes” response means the respondent did not have health insurance.

There is not a single variable that records both race and ethnicity. You would need to create such a variable by combining the race variable (RACEA) and one of the Hispanic ethnicity variables (HIPYN/HISPETH).

Hope this helps.
