Historical UK census with names?

I am interested in the UK historical full-count censuses with names for a research project. Is there an application procedure (through IPUMS or otherwise) to obtain access to such datasets?

Thank you for your answers in advance!

In most cases, as per our agreement with national statistical offices that collaborate with us to distribute data, IPUMS International prohibits the use of the data to identify individuals; this includes suppression of names. There are a couple of exceptions, such as our 1851 UK sample that includes names. Users who hope to access restricted versions of the data or information beyond what we offer on IPUMS International may want to reach out to the original data provider. Our international partners are listed here.

Hi Isabel. Have the rules concerning access changed? About 18 years ago I was able to gain access to data for the 1881 Great Britain census which included the names of all individuals reported in the census returns.

The North Atlantic Population Project (NAPP), which is now part of IPUMS International, provides historical complete count censuses of several countries, including Great Britain, which contain names. You may have been able to access the 1881 UK census with names directly from NAPP in the past. Names are not available in the current versions of the 1881 complete count UK data, but if you send us an email at ipums@umn.edu with more information about the data you are looking for (e.g., if you are looking for a sample or full count data, whether you’re hoping to access data with all individuals’ first and last names, heads of households’ names, just last names, etc.), we should be able to assist you.
