Download extract error 403

Dear IPUMS Support Team,

I’m encountering an issue when attempting to download my IPUMS International extract.

Each time I click the “Download .DTA” button or try to access the download link directly, I receive a “403 Forbidden” error page instead of the actual data file.

When I attempt to download using command-line tools (with authenticated cookies), the resulting .dta.gz file is only a few kilobytes in size, rather than the expected hundreds of megabytes.

The command file (.do) link also appears to be missing on the extract page, there’s nothing on the « command files » box. I rechecked my extract, and I did tick .dta.

Date created: October 9, 2025

Could you please assist me in retrieving this extract or provide a direct link to the .dta.gz and .do files?

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

My apologies for the technical difficulties. Our IT team was able to confirm that your extract was not correctly processed by our system. Since the issue has been resolved, please go ahead and request a new data extract.

Since you requested a Stata formatted (.dta) data extract, your extract will by design not include a (.do) command file. Once you’ve downloaded and unzipped your (.dta.gz) data file (we recommend 7-Zip for Windows and The Unarchiver for Mac), you will be able to open the resulting file directly in Stata without requiring a command file. Command files are only produced when requesting a fixed-width (.dat) data file, since they are required for inputting this unformatted data into a statistics package.
