1940 Census data at the city level?

Hi,

How can I obtain characteristics at the city level using the 1940 census data? I tried to pull it at the place level from NHGIS, but there are no active data tables for this level of analysis, even though it appears to be a valid level (i.e., place by state). Do I have to use the IPUMS USA data and aggregate the data to the city level?

Dear Sam,

You will have to use IPUMS USA complete count data and aggregate to cities to obtain city-level characteristics for 1940. We don’t have any place-level data tables in NHGIS for that census. Our place-level data is available from 1970-present.
