What variable is best to use in place of METFIPS for CPS 1979 monthly data?

Hi All,

From 1977 - 85, the CPS used these codes for metropolitan areas. Although this link appears in the METFIPS variable description, there are no data in METFIPS during these years. I’m really looking for anything akin to MSA for this period.

Thank you for bringing it to our attention that METFIPS is currently not available for a number of samples. We plan to add this variable to the following CPS basic Monthly Survey samples sometime in the next few weeks: December 1977-June 1985 and October 1985-December 1988.
