METAREA and MET2013 Codes

Hi,

I am planning to use Metro Area data for the years 1990-2019 and I was wondering if there is a way to generate a harmonized code for the METAREA and MET2013 variables.

I have read that the crosswalk excel sheet (IPUMS USA: descr: MET2013) can be used to achieve this but I am not sure how to do this on STATA or Excel?

Genuinely appreciate any advice on this.

There is no simple way to do this. Currently there are no harmonized metro codes connecting years before 2000 and after 2012, though IPUMS does have plans to extend MET2013 back to at least 1990. Please see this forum post for some ideas on how to construct a linkage yourself.
