Latest Child Support Supplement Data

When is the child support supplement data for 2022 will be updated on IPUMS? I cannot find information regarding this on the Census website either. Was the child support supplement questions not included in the latest ASEC survey waves?

The Child Support Supplement of the CPS was not conducted in 2022. To the best of my knowledge, this supplement was to be fielded in April 2023, but the data have not yet been publicly released by the Census Bureau. We do not have information on an expected release date. You could certainly contact the Census Bureau and ask them about the supplement and plans for the data release.

Hello! The 2023 CPS CSS data is on the Census Bureau’s website (released late last week). Do you know if/when IPUMS may be able to include this?

We definitely plan to release data for this supplement, but I don’t have a timeline at this point. I will share your interest with our data team, which prioritizes releases for frequently requested supplements.

If you need the data sooner, you may try downloading the unharmonized data directly from the Census Bureau. You can merge the data with an IPUMS extract using the linking keys HRHHID, HRHHID2, and LINENO (referred to as PULINENO in the CB data). However, you will want to make sure in this case that you’re referring to the Census codebook for any changes in the coding structure for your variables of interest. If you plan to do this linking, you should also be aware that data gathered for the Child Support Supplement, administered in April, are matched to the same individuals in the March ASEC file instead of being included in the April basic monthly sample. Therefore, you will want to merge the data with an IPUMS extract of the 2023 ASEC sample. See the IPUMS CPS supplement sample note for further details.
