I have watched the tutorial videos and am still unable to open my data in SAS or Excel what am I doing wrong?

How do I decompress the file to open it in excel? Also, every time I try to run the program in SAS I receive errors but I followed the directions straight from the tutorial video.

I’m sorry to hear you are running into problems. You can decompress your files using 7-zip. Can you please let us know what error messages you are receiving? That will help us to assist you further.

I receive errors when trying to create the libname IPUMS and an error reading "

NOTE 484-185: Format YEAR_F was not found or could not be loaded.

" for all of the variables.

I’m not sure if you are using the SAS-formatted data or not, but you might give that a try. To request SAS-formatted data, revise your extract request and on the final screen you see before submitting it click the ‘change’ link to the right of ‘data format’. Select SAS and proceed. Then, download and decompress your new SAS-formatted file. You can then open it in SAS like any other SAS file. Please let us know if this doesn’t solve the problem.

I am still receiving all of the same errors. SAS will not allow me to create the libname IPUMS.

I’m not sure I understand the problem. If you are using the SAS-formatted data then you do not need to use the command file. You would simply open the SAS-formatted data file in SAS.

If you choose to use the command file method then you will need to edit the libname line in the command file to specify the directory. Feel free to send us your edited command file as an attachment to your reply here if you would like.

I also used the SAS video tutorial and changed the libname statement using my pathway where I saved the file. I keep getting the error message “library IPUMS does not exist”
