I tried to download the data with SPSS, but I would get this nonsense data:
þ+¦=ôUƒ)ÿ‚9¿¬åßÿü×^MþþJÿ>4N_Ýú®+¬˜×ï:±^îCÄz8aÇ~,b@‚¡ýŠ·_ÏëÆ{_žp
etc.
I tried in all 3 formats (SPSS, SAS, CSV). What is the proper way to download the data in SPSS? Could you please let me know? Thank you!
Anybody have solutions for this problem. I searched many threads, forums but no answer, please help me. I tried many ways but it didn’t work.
Update: I removed SPSS and reinstalled, reset all setting to default, everything is working normally again.
By default, our data are compressed and fixed-width files (*.dat.gz). You will need to decompress or unzip them before using them. I recommend 7zip as a free decompression software for Windows and The Unarchiver for Macs. See this blog post from IPUMS USA for instructions on opening your data extract on your PC. If you prefer, you can request a formatted data extract that does not require a command file to read it into the software; this option is available for Stata (.dta format), SPSS (.sav format), and SAS (.sas7bdat format). You can also request a .csv file, which can be opened in Excel. You can select the data format for your extract when you “check out” your data extract cart, or by revising your extract from the “my data” page. Formatted files (.dta, .sav, .sas7bdat, and .csv) will also need to be decompressed.
