How to identify members of the military?

Hi, I’m working with the IPUMS ACS data and I am not sure how to identify active members of the military, the database from the Census Bureau has the variable ESR which has 2 values from which to identify active members of the military. Is there a way of doing the same thing using IPUMS data?

Yes, you can find the same information provided in ESR using the IPUMS variable EMPSTATD (the detailed version of the EMPSTAT variable). Alternatively, you could use the detailed version of the veteran status variable, VETSTATD.
