I would like to identify “civilian noninstitutional population” using either CQ or GQTYPE variable, please advise
In IPUMS USA, non-civilians—individuals who are part of the armed forces—can be identified using the variable EMPSTATD, the detailed version of EMPSTAT. To see EMPSTATD codes, toggle to detailed codes in the codes tab of EMPSTAT. EMPSTATD is automatically added to your extract when you add EMPSTAT. EMPSTATD codes 14 and 15 identify members of the armed forces.
Individuals who live in institutions can be identified using the variable GQ. GQ classifies all housing units as falling into one of three main categories: households, group quarters, or vacant units. Code 3 identifies individuals living in institutions.
Individuals who do not have GQ=3 and who do not have EMPSTATD=(14 or 15) are not institutionalized and are civilians.
Note that the Current Population Survey (CPS) surveys only the civilian noninstitutional population. You can access CPS data from IPUMS CPS.
