How do you link/join a tobacco supplement from Jan to a march sample with income data?
I’m trying to get tobacco use and income variables for the smae people.
IPUMS-CPS does not currently offer variables that facilitate linking respondents across samples. Such variables are currently being worked on but there is no planned release date for the new variables at this time. However, NBER does offer a method for linking March samples across years, which you might be able to modify to link a January sample to a March sample. Some of the variables you will need are not available on IPUMS-CPS, but you can download the same samples from NBER (which has all of the necessary variables) and sequentially merge the NBER information onto the IPUMS-CPS data since the two files share a sort order. I believe the linking procedure varies a bit from year to year, so please refer to the NBER documentation for more details.
