Analysing variable INCWAGE with 999999 as N/A and 999998 as missing

Hello,

I am analysing the income (using variable INCWAGE) of people with a high school diploma as their highest degree (EDUCD = 063) and people with a bachelors degree as their highest degree (EDUCD = 101) in RStudio.

The code 999999 indicates N/A and the code 999998 indicates missing for the variable income.

My question is: When I am taking the mean of the income are 999999 and 999998 included as incomes or does RStudio recognises that these are not incomes? For the maximum income of people with a high school diploma as their highest degree (EDUCD = 063) I got 999999 as result. Does that mean that the maximum income is $999,999 or that it is N/A?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Ack! It definitely doesn’t exclude them automatically. You’ll need to filter them out beforehand. If you’re computing means you should also be on the lookout for topcoding.
