We are working on employment patterns of Tanzania and we discovered several inconsistencies over time in comparison with the Census Report 2012 (i.e. Public Utilities don’t include wast management in 2002, but they do in 2012). We would like to be sure that we are covering the correct trends and don’t see developments which are due to different classifications.
Therefore, it would be very helpful to know how exactly the answers in the questionnaires are matched to the given industries in the data you kindly provide, and which ISIC classification you follow.

The initial assignment of respondents’ reported activities into industries is part of the 2002 Tanzania survey process. This industry code is then reported in the unrecoded variable IND. You can see the details of the industry groupings used by the Tanzania survey in the enumeration instructions. As you will notice, the categories only roughly match any versions of the ISIC coding scheme.
IPUMS-International then recodes IND to create the INDGEN variable, which closely matches the main industry groupings of ISIC Rev.4. However, INDGEN is created simply by regrouping the main industry values found in IND. In other words, IPUMS does not directly convert the respondent’s original answer into an industry classification.
