sorry, i didn't see this in the FAQ/tutorials. i want to *just* download CPI99 (the CPS version).

i would think i would get 55 or so rows of data, one for each year from 1962 or so to 2017 or so.

rather, i seem to get an entry for every household surveyed in each of the years (8863263 rows total).

i can deal with that. but, i’m curious what i’m doing wrong?

Don’t worry. You are not doing anything wrong. IPUMS CPS provides microdata, which means each observation will be an individual within a household. In order to get the data in the way you want, you’ll need to use the collapse commandin STATA. Or an even easier method is to use the tables showing the year-specific values of CPI99 found on this page.
