Is it possible to find and extract data for respondents’ qualitative responses collected by surveyors who marked “Other” within categorical variables?
Specifically, I’m looking for any qualitative responses to code “16 Other” in the Injury - IRCAUSE variable. I was able to extract the frequency of “Other”, but I am hoping for more specific qualitative responses related to an injury.
IPUMS does not integrate verbatim responses to the injury/poisoning records. Some verbatim responses are available on the original data files from the National Center for Health Statistics (verbatim injury record responses are record type “75” in the original NCHS data). You could merge these files onto your IPUMS extract using these instructions from IPUMS NHIS.
