Is there a way from IPUMS data (especially for Census 1990, 2000 and APS afterwards) to distinguish between mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan as the place of birth, as in the original Census/APS data? Thanks!
Yes, there is! If you use the detailed codes of BPL you will be able to break down birthplaces between China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This isn’t the case in all samples, but the 1990, 2000, and ACS samples do have this capability.
