I’m looking at occupations in the 1940 Census and there’s an occ code 360 but the codebook (https://usa.ipums.org/usa/volii/occ1940.shtml) lists only an occ 260, though numerically it is where 360 would fall. I’m wondering if this is a typo in the codebook and occupation 360 is tailors and tailoresses, or if there is something else I am missing. Thank you!
I believe you are correct. I see in the 1940 1% data that there is an OCC code of 360, but not one of 260. I also see in the 1940 OCC codes list, the codes go in order, but code 260 tailors and tailoresses is out of order, between 358 and 362. Also, the source variable of OCC in 1940, US1940A_OCCUP, has the same codes that OCC has, except for tailors and tailoresses. The source variable shows the correct code of 360.
I will let the IPUMS USA team know about this error so that they can update the documentation. In the meantime, it’s reasonable for you to go ahead with the assumption that code 360 is tailors and tailoresses.
Thank you for letting us know! Please let me know if you have any questions.
