NHGIS 1970 3rd Count (block-level data)

Hi Folks,

Apologies in advance for cross-posting.

I need to learn a bit more about where NHGIS sourced its 1970 3rd count file from. This file provides block-level data from the 1970 census. The .pdf documentation was taken from ICPSR 4th Count and, upon further review, ICPSR does not even have a record of the 1970 3rd count.

Any ideas where NHGIS received this file from? I would really like to know.

Dear Ryan,

We obtained the 1970 3rd count file from the Odum Institute at the University of North Carolina. The data came from that group, but we used the PDF documentation from ICPSR. I don’t believe ICPSR had the 3rd count file, so we found an extant version at Odum.

The Odum Institute provides the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th count files. I’m not 100% sure whether we used the Odum or ICPSR versions of the 1st, 2nd, and 4th files. I can check our original metadata to find that out, if you’d like.
