Mozambique language data: Non-"Other" languages

Hi all,

I’m trying to download language data from Mozambique’s 2017 census. The given possible values are

01 Cicopi
02 Cindau
03 Cinyanja
04 Sena
05 Echuwabo
06 Emakhuwa
07 Elomwe
08 Xitsonga or Xichangana
09 Xitswa
10 Portuguese
11 Other languages
12 Cibalke
13 Cindonje
14 Citonga
15 Cishona
16 Ciqwaka
17 Cicewa
18 Cingoni
19 Cinsenga
20 Gombe
21 Sena Care
22 Phondzo
23 Tonga
24 Ciyao
25 Cinyungwe
26 Ekarungu
27 Merenje
28 Coti
29 Ecocti
30 Bitonga or Gitonga
31 Kimwani
32 Shimakonde
33 Xirhonga
34 Xikalanga
35 Xilwandle
36 Xidzivi
37 Chitewe
38 Isiswazi
39 Isizulo
40 Kiswahili
41 Other Mozambican language
97 Other foreign language
98 Unknown
99 NIU (Not in universe)

But when I look through the data, everything below 11 Other languages is subsumed within 11 Other languages, so there’s no data on Ciyao or Cibalke for example. Is there a way to access the finer-scale/full data, since it has been collected? This report shows that this data is available somehow, but I don’t know how to access it. I would simply use this report if it was at the ADM3 level, but alas it is not. Thanks!

The original data IPUMS International has access to from the 2017 Mozambique census includes labels for the following languages:

Cicopi
Cindau
Cinyanja
Sena
Echuwabo
Emakhuwa
Elomwe
Xitsonga or Xichangana
Xitswa
Portuguese
Other languages

We do not have access to more detailed information about what the other languages are for any respondent. These languages are all labelled “Other” in the original dataset that IPUMS has authorization to use and provide on IPUMS International.

You could reach out to the original data provider about accessing more detailed language data.

Thank you very much!
