I am looking through the IPUMS International data set using the data cart feature for a bunch of different countries like Argentina, Armenia and Bangladesh, and I can’t seem to find the data for income and hours worked. Am I missing something, or are the variables just not present?
A paper that I read earlier had referenced the IPUMS international data for income and work, which is why I am looking for the same data.
Without knowing more about the paper you’re referencing, I can share some general guidelines. IPUMS International contains a collection of census samples and a number of labor force surveys from around the world, and as such, variable availability will be different across countries, time periods and type of census or survey. You can view variable availability across samples in our web interface, for example you can view all income variables and work variables, but note that these pages are limited by your sample selection. First, select your samples of interest (or select all samples if you are exploring availability) and then search for variables of interest. Each variable webpage has a tab titled “Availability” that will list which countries/samples that variable is available in (see INCTOT, for example) As to your countries of interest, it does not appear that any variables on hours worked (such as HRSMAIN or HRSWORK1) or income (such as INCTOT or INCEARN) are available for Argentia, Armenia or Bangladesh.
