Merging IPUMS CPS (ASEC) with ICPSR March CPS data

Hi,

I am using IPUMS CPS years 1964-2001. I am doing an analysis which leverages policy changes at the state level, so I really need data disaggregated by state. I noticed that in the years 1968-1976, IPUMS groups many states together. However, in the ICPSR data, the individual state is available. I have downloaded the ICPSR data for these years, however, I am having a hard time figuring out which variables I could use to match the datasets. This is where I downloaded the data from in case this is helpful: Current Population Surveys: March Individual-Level Extracts, 1968-1992

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might have.

Best,
Annie

If you look at the codebooks for the ICPSR files, you will see the table below in Appendix A (I’ve re-sorted it to illustrate shared codes). As you can see, from 1968-1976, several states share the same code. I checked 1970 more closely. For this year, 30 unique codes are listed in the table below. That matches with the number of codes in the IPUMS CPS data. I also downloaded the ICPSR file for 1970. There were only 30 unique state codes in the data. So it seems the ICPSR data have the same aggregation as the IPUMS data.
