Merging Data

Hello,

I have a previously downloaded data set for females in the year 2014 from IPUMS-USA. I want to download additional variables to add to this data set. However, I am using SPSS and I am concerned about how to merge the two data sets so that the additional variables are still applicable to the women from my original data set.

Do I need to start over and download all of the variables at once to ensure that the observations correctly match each woman?

To merge new variables to a previous IPUMS-USA extract, you will want to merge your datasets together by the variables YEAR, DATANUM, SERIAL, and PERNUM. These variables will uniquely identify each individual from your two datasets.
