Hi,
I am working on some data (ACS 2012 1-year) related to country of birth for African immigrants and want to include a description of which countries are included in NS/NEC categories. I used a combination of the IPUMS code list, the UN list of African countries, and Census categories for microdata to try and generate this list. I can get details about Eastern Africa, NS/NEC, Middle Africa, NS/NEC, Northern Africa, NS/NEC, and Western Africa, NS/NEC, but don’t see a category for Southern Africa, NS/NEC. South Africa is the only country in Southern Africa called out, are other countries in Southern Africa (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Swaziland) considered Africa, NS/NEC?
Here is what I’ve determined:
Eastern Africa, NS includes Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mozambique, Reunion, Rwanda, Seychelles
Middle Africa, NS includes Angola, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe
Northern Africa, NS includes Tunisia, Western Sahara
Western Africa, NS includes Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Mail, Mauritania, Niger
But, there is no Southern Africa, NS category, which leads me to believe Bostwana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Swaziland fall into the broader Africa, NS.
Thanks very much for your help!
