I need data for 1-year, state to state migration flows, for the USA. Where do i find it?
IPUMS-USA provides nationally representative microdata. 1-year, state to state migration flows can be estimated for 1950 and the ACS/PRCS samples using the variables MIGRATE1 and MIGPLAC1. If you are looking for the data used to createthe beautiful graphs produced by the New York Times’ TheUpshot, you have come to the right place, however, because IPUMS-USA is a microdata source you will need to produce the estimates yourself. I highly recommend reading “WHEN AND HOW TO USE CENSUS MICRODATA” by Robert Gebeloff, one of the authors who created the interstate migration graphs in question.
I hope this helps.
