Has anybody written R code to generate the HIU variables from SHADAC?
If not, then does anybody still have the SAS code for generating those variables? It looks like the document that had the SAS code is no longer available online, and I’m not very experienced with STATA.
Related question: is there an estimate of when these variables will be added to the IPUMS USA data for 2024?
I’m not aware of any R code to generate the HIU variables from SHADAC. It sounds like you are already aware of the Stata code available from SHADAC; this code should be straightforward to follow and reproduce in R, even if you are not familiar with Stata. I would recommend contacting SHADAC directly at shadac@umn.edu to ask about the SAS and/or R code.
IPUMS typically makes HIU variables available for single-year ACS samples when we release the corresponding 5-year ACS microdata. The Census Bureau is scheduled to release the 2024 5-year ACS microdata on March 5 (the federal government shutdown delayed the release of some federal data), and our team will work quickly to release them after that. We will update our revision history and send an email to registered IPUMS users following the release.
Thank you Isabel! I’m going to follow your advice and ask SHADAC about making SAS and R code available.
I ended up doing what you suggested (translated the STATA code to R code) and it worked pretty well for 2019-2023, so I think this will work as a temporary solution while we wait for your updates.
