Germany - West vs East

However, there are different samples for East and West Germany:

Just to clarify: Is the only way to distinguish observations from East and West Germany by using the info on the sample years? (East: 1971, 1981; West: 1970, 1987)

You can see which sample pertains to East or West Germany in your data by looking at the label on the variable SAMPLE, which is preselected for all extracts.
