for census data of P.R. China: where can I find urban/rural identifier?

Dear IPUMS:

I’m current using 1982 and 1990 Census data of China. I know the census was conducted with the knowledge of the urban/rural status of the residents. Yet, I have not been able to find such information in the datasets available on IPUMS International.

Please advise,

Unfortunately, urban/rural status was not included on the Public Use file IPUMS-International used to generate the P.R. China Census Samples. However, the geography variables may help to identify households as being either Urban or Rural by linking the specific geographies to an official list of urban/rural areas.
