Dropping cases living with subfamilies

Hi,

In the ACS 2023 microdata, I want to calculate adjusted household size and income using the OECD equivalence scale, but I do not want to include individuals who live with related or unrelated subfamilies within the same household. However, I am not sure whether I should exclude these cases using the NSUBFAM variable or the SUBFAM variable.

Thanks a lot!!

My understanding is that your goal is to drop all individuals who live in households that include one or more subfamilies. You want to restrict your analysis to households that contain just one family. Please correct me if that is not the case.

You can use the variable NSUBFAM to identify households without any subfamilies. In households that contain just one family—and no subfamilies—the variable NSUBFAM equals zero for all household members. This variable captures related and unrelated subfamilies. Note that NSUBFAM equals zero for people in group quarters.

I suggest reading the documentation on subfamilies before using subfamily variables to ensure a thorough understanding of the concepts used to create the variables.

Yes, exactly. I want to drop all individuals who live in households that contain one or more subfamilies. After removing them, I want to calculate equivalized household size and equivalized household income.

Once you have restricted your analytical sample to only those households that contain a single family, you do not need to make any modifications to the household size or household income variables you are using, such as NUMPREC and HHINCOME.
