Do I need special statistical software like SPSS, SAS, or Stata to use NHGIS data?
No. Any spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel will work fine, and even that technically is not required. Statistical software may make it easier to analyze large amounts of data, and NHGIS does provide an output file format specifically for the three major statistical software packages, complete with a command file for each.
