The data on IPUMS NHIS are a harmonized version of the original, public use National Health Interview Survey data. The public use versions of these data do not include more detailed occupation codes than are available in IPUMS NHIS. More detailed occupation codes are available in the restricted use versions of the NHIS data, which are only available to approved researchers through the NCHS Research Data Centers or a Federal Statistical Research Data Center.
Thank you very much for your response. DO you know what detailed occupations are included in the SOC=36 code? it says firefighters and prevention workers. I am not sure what are included in the prevention workers. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you again

I assume you are referring to code 36 in the IPUMS NHIS variable OCC. Please let me know if that is not correct. The occupation classification schemes used in OCC in IPUMS NHIS are the Classified Index of Occupation (1969-1982) and the Standard Occupational Classification (1983-onward). Note that the SOC categories and codes have changed over time. You can find non-exhaustive lists of occupations associated with different vintages of SOC codes on the BLS website:
2018 Standard Occupation Classification System
2010 Standard Occupation Classification System
Revising the Standard Occupational Classification System (includes 1998 occupations)
The 1980 SOC codes don’t appear to have more detail or example occupations for firefighters and fire prevention workers
Thank you very much for your response. Yes, I was referring to code 36 in the IPUMS NHIS variable OCC, and your clarification is greatly appreciated. Could you please point me to links for the Classified Index of Occupation (1969–1982) and the Standard Occupational Classification system (1983 onward)?
Thank you again for your assistance.

I am summarizing information from the IPUMS NHIS user note on occupation and industry variables and linking to a few additional resources that may be useful for you. The SOC was established in 1977, and the 1977 SOC was used for the NHIS in 1983-1991. The SOC was then revised in 1980 and used in the 1980 census. SOC codes were revised again in 2000, 2010, and 2018. There is not just one single SOC that was used in all years from 1983-onward. Below are links to documentation on the SOC vintages of 1977, 1980, 1998, 2000, 2010, and 2018, as well as the 1960 and 1970 classified indexes of occupations.
Thank you very much for your response. It is very helpful!
