Hello,
I am looking for health coverage information about Puerto Rico. Is that only available through the PRCS or can I find it in the ACS as well? I know PR has a statefip in ACS but when I downloaded by data set, PR wasn’t in there at all, so I had to use PRCS. And generally is there any PR data in ACS or is it all in PRCS?
Thanks so much!
You are correct. The American Community Survey is split up into two distinct files, the ACS and the PRCS. If you want information on Puerto Rico, you’ll need to use the PRCS. These samples are found on the Select Samples page under the Puerto Rico tab.
Hi Jeff,
I am looking at Puerto Rico data via the SDA platform. It seems to me that there’s something wrong with the weights. When I perform a simple crosstab of household food stamp recipiency, using the hhwt, for 2018, it indicates that there are over 2.8MM households in the island (col & row totals). A quick search in the census website indicated that in 2018 there were just over 1.1MM households. Am I doing something wrong or is something off with the weights?
Thanks
I think I know the source of the discrepancy here. Since the data in IPUMS USA are individual level, when performing analysis at the household level you need to limit your data to one observation per household. In SDA, the easiest way to do this is include “pernum(1)” in the selection filters field. I just tried this myself and found a household count in Puerto Rico to be much closer to the “official” published count.
