I am using the Canada 1881 and 1911 census microdata from NAPP. I want to map the 1881 NAPP-modified HISCO occupation codes into either US 1950 OCC codes or Canada 1911 detailed OCC codes, both of which are available in 1911. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel so if someone has this or knows where I can find it let me know!
There is not a ready-made crosswalk that I’m aware of, but this shouldn’t be to difficult - as long as I’m understanding what you want to do correctly. The OCC50US variable in IPUMS NAPP applies the 1950 Census Bureau occupational classification system to occupational data. Both OCC50US and OCCHISCO are available in the Canada 1891 and US 1880a samples. If you include both of these variables in an extract with either of these sample, you’ll be able to see how these codes relate to each other.
