Hello everyone,
I am trying to find a relationship file that links each census tract to its corresponding PUMA for the 2020 boundaries. I was able to find this file for the 2010 boundaries, but I haven’t been able to find an updated version for 2020.
Does anyone know if such a file exists or where I might be able to find it?
Also, does anyone know whether the 2017–2021 5-Year ACS data uses 2020 or 2010 census tract boundaries?
Thank you !
IPUMS USA provides PUMA maps, boundary files & composition information through the Geographic Tools & Resources page. There’s a link there to the 2020 PUMAs page, where we provide a tract-to-PUMA relationship file.
The Census Bureau’s Geography Boundaries by Year page describes which geographic definitions are used in each release of ACS data. The ACS summary tables have used 2020 census tract definitions since the 2020 5-year release.

The IPUMS Crosswalk is very helpful, but it doesn’t work for the current data from Connecticut. In 2022, Connecticut changed its geographical references from 8 counties to 9 county equivalents, which have their own FIPS codes. These don’t line up with the FIPS codes in the current crosswalk. Here’s where you can find the new crosswalk. GitHub - CT-Data-Collaborative/2022-tract-crosswalk: Census tract crosswalk to town, county, county equivalent, zipcode, and PUMA (2010)
As a consequence of this change my data vendor has substituted the county-equivalent code for the county code. They had to choose one, and that seems to be the right one to go with because the PUMA’s conform to these new boundaries; not county boundaries. So, I figure I’m not the only person who ran into this issue.
I hope you find this helpful.

Here’s where you can find documentation on the change: Federal Register :: Change to County-Equivalents in the State of Connecticut
