A list of variables constructed by IPUMS from PUMS

Hi,

I’m trying to figure out if I can use PUMS instead of IPUMS data for my analysis due to some timing issue with the 2022 5-year ACS. However, I don’t know if it is feasible. Is there a list of variables created by IPUMS and special adjustments done by IPUMS so I can assess the scale of the work to decide if to move forward or not?

IPUMS USA assigns new variable names and often different codes to the variables from the PUMS files to facilitate comparability over time. It is not realistic to list all of the changes between the two versions of all variables here. You could leverage the source variables tab (see screenshot below), which provides links to unharmonized versions of the variables for the 1940-forward US decennial census and ACS samples. Including both the harmonized and unharmonized versions of the variable in your extract would allow you to run a cross-tab and see how they map onto one another. I hope this helps.
