I am looking into migration to and from San Francisco using the 5-Year 2014 ACS Migration PUMAs. Working with the data, I have come to realize that the migration PUMA for San Francisco is both 7500 and 2200. I believe this is true because 2200 was the super puma for the 2000 Census: https://usa.ipums.org/usa/volii/PUMA_… and 7500 was the super puma for the 2010 Census http://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/refer…
But I could not find documentation that states this clearly. I want to be absolutely sure I am doing the right thing. Thank you.
You are correct in your conclusions. In multi-year ACS files, PUMA boundaries depend on the year the respondent was interviewed. In the case of the 2014 5-Year file, respondents interviewed in years 2010 and 2011 will follow the Census 2000-based PUMAS, while respondents interviewed in years 2012-2014 will follow the Census 2010-based PUMAs. This page describes the relationship in more depth and also provides a map that displays how the boundaries for Migration PUMAs changed between 2000 and 2010.
