I’m struggling to find a 1940 tract shapefile for Chicago. I have census attribute data; I’m just looking for the boundary file. I am not finding that in the NHGIS data finder. Can anyone offer suggestions? Or maybe there’s somewhere else I can find that boundary file? Thanks
Dear Amy,
If you apply the following filters in NHGIS, you will be able to download the 1940 census tract shapefile for the US:
YEARS == 1940
GEOGRAPHIC LEVELS == TRACT
Then, you can look at the GIS FILES tab in the SELECT DATA grid to get the shapefile. Our shapefile will include all tracts in the US that were delineated for 1940.
