I’m exploring U.S. 1880 Census data (100%), which is wonderful. One variable for occupation is “occhisco”, the Historical Classification of Occupations. Almost all the values are labelled in the data file, but some labels are missing.
In some cases these labels must be be idiosyncratic, as the codes don’t apear in the HISCO database (http://historyofwork.iisg.nl/major.php).
The original 1% sample user guide (Ruggles & Menard 1994) doesn’t include any information on HISCO occupational coding.
Any help would be much appreciated!
