Hi,
I am working with the SCHOOL variable in several US census, and I noticed it is missing from the 100% count of the 1880 and 1900 Censuses. Are there plans to release it sometime in the future? I am doing county-level analysis, so 100% count is preferable to the samples.
Thank you,
Vasily
We are currently working on adding SCHOOL to the 1900 full count data. In the meantime, you may want to consider using SCHLMNTH, which reports months in school. Unfortunately, we do not currently have plans for adding SCHOOL to the 1880 full count data.
You may already be aware, but SCHOOL is currently available for the 1900 1% and 5% samples and the 1880 10% and 1% samples.

Is there any chance you have an update on when SCHOOL will be available for full count 1900? I have been using the 1% sample and I feel like there may be a lot of noise at the county level. Having access to 100% Schooling data would be very beneficial for my research.
Also, could you elaborate on the 1880 SCHOOL variable? Was it simply never coded in the 100%, so there is no chance of ever obtaining it?
Thanks for following up on this question. At this time, the SCHOOL variable is available in all full count files except for the 1900 file. The IPUMS USA Team is still working on making the SCHOOL variable available for the 1900 full count file.

Thank you for answering that, I feel bad for not looking at the variable description again. I was only checking the announcements page regularly. I don’t think the addition of SCHOOL to the full count 1880 was announced.
I am looking forward to the release of SCHOOL in the 1900 full count.
