When I run IPUMS Abacus to show the number and percentage of Californians at different levels of poverty for ACS 2017, I don’t understand the percentages it reports out. For example, the weighted count for people with incomes below 100% FPL is listed as 5,198,666 (12.1%). When I sum all of the weighted estimates for all groups and calculate that number as a percentage of the total on my own, I get 13.1%. What am I missing?
The percentages you were seeing were actually based on the unweighted counts. This was a known error in IPUMS Abacus, and has now been fixed.
Huzzah! Thank you! I thought I was losing my mind.
