Is there anyway to identify the survey respondent’s spouse’s birthplace?
Yes, this is possible by using the IPUMS derived family interrelationship variables, and specifically the Attach Characteristics tool. Once you have the birthplace variable (BPL) added into your data extract, you can attach the birthplace of a respondent’s spouse by clicking the “Attach Characteristics” button on the Extract Request page. This will provide various options for attaching the characteristics of a respondent’s mother, father, and spouse. This will create a new variable, called bpl_sp, that identifies the birthplace of a respondent’s spouse.
