Single Fathers living with children under 18

Hi

How do I select a sample of single fathers living with at least one child under 18 years either alone in a single parent household or living in an extended household without a spouse present. My main challenge is on how to link the children under the age 18 to thier fathers since the variable nchild does not control for age of the child.

I think you can identify this information using the MARST, SEX, and YNGCH variables. Single fathers can be identified with MARST and SEX. Since you are aiming to identify fathers with AT LEAST one child under the age of 18, simply knowing the age of the youngest child should do the trick. If a father’s youngest child is older than 18, then the father does not have any children under 18.
