I combined data from the CPS displaced worker file and ASEC for years 2011-2018. I was wondering which survey weights I need to use for analysis?
It sounds like you are hoping to link data from the Displaced Worker Supplement to the same respondents’ data from the ASEC. When analyzing CPS supplement data, you should generally use the weight specific to that supplement. If you were analyzing Displaced Worker Supplement data only, you would use DWSUPPWT. Because you are also using ASEC data, you ideally should adjust the weight to account for potential differential attrition. IPUMS provides longitudinal weights to adjust for attrition between months. These are based on the basic monthly weights (WTFINL). You could construct an adjusted version of DWSUPPWT based on those Displaced Worker Supplement respondents who can link to the following ASEC (see the Stata replication files next to “Create Your Own” in the Longitudinal Weights table on the IPUMS CPS longitudinal weights page). This will make the analysis more representative of the full group of Displaced Worker Supplement respondents. Please note that using this program will generate weights that sum to the number of individuals who are in the Displaced Worker Supplement sample and are eligible to link to the ASEC. This will be a (nonrandom) subset of the full Displaced Worker Supplement sample (you can check this using the RoPES tool), so although you can use these weights to calculate means and other statistics, they shouldn’t be used to calculate frequencies (e.g, the number of displaced workers who have Medicaid).
If the amount of attrition between the Displaced Worker Supplement and the following ASEC is low (especially for any subgroups of interest), adjustment of the weights may not have meaningful effects on your estimates.
