PUMA (1970 & 1980) & Census Tract

Hi.
I am looking for data of the population with Irish background (Irish born, or Irish parents or ancestry) for 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000.
I have two questions:

  1. I am aware that you do not publish census tract data for those years. Is there another way to find census tract data for these years?

  2. I assume that my second best option is using PUMA data. But it seems that PUMA data is not available for 1970 and 1980. Is there a way to find those data?

Thanks for your help!

Our spatial project, IPUMS NHGIS, has aggregate summary tables at the census tract level for all of the years that you’ve mentioned. This includes place-of-birth tables from 1960-2000 and ancestry from 1980-2000. For 1980 and 1990, place-of-birth tables aren’t available for entire tracts, but only for a “compound level” that includes intersections between tracts and different county subdivisions (see this FAQ for more detail). Ancestry tables are available for whole tracts in 1980 & 1990, and for place-of-birth tables in 1970. You can refer to the screenshot below for the appropriate filter in the data finder tool.

PUMAs were created as part of the 1990 decennial census and are therefore not available for prior years. In the IPUMS USA microdata, the smallest geographic unit identified for all respondents in 1970 (metro samples) and 1980 is the county group (CNTYGP97 and CNTYGP98). While 1970 county groups do not provide any sub-county detail, 1980 county groups do subdivide some larger counties. Note that the counties identified in COUNTYFIP and COUNTYICP for these samples are based on county group data and do not identify any additional counties.

Thanks a lot! You’re so helpful!
