Is it possible to find the parent’s highest education level for HS students in the ATUS? Could this be merged using information from other household members?
Yes, this is possible. The PELNMOM and PELNDAD variables are self-reported variables in the ATUS data and can make it possible to link the characteristics of mothers and fathers to children. You will then be able to limit your sample to respondents in high school by using the SCHLCOLL variable and find the parents education level with the EDUC variable. A final note: the family interrelationship variables are often in need of cleaning based on the specifics of your project, and due to the fact that they are self-reported in ATUS data. IPUMS-USA has a good introduction to these family interrelationship variables that may be helpful.
