I need data on MSA characteristics for 8 years, namely, 2000-2007 (in particular, 2000-2004). I have checked the variables that can be used to aggregate the ACS samples in this way, and, seems like, they are unavailable for 2000-2004. To double check, I would like to ask if there is any variable that is available and I could use for MSA level aggregation?
Due to the smaller sample size of the pre-2005 ACS, state is the smallest identifiable geography in the 2000-2004 ACS public use microdata samples. In public use microdata samples from 2005 and later years, IPUMS infers metro areas from public use microdata areas (PUMAs), which are the smallest identifiable geography in those data.
